Whole Class Reading

What does Whole Class Reading look like?

All pupils engage in Whole Class Reading 3 times a week. It is taught as a whole class which involves a teacher and children reading and tracking a class text.

These sessions promote discussion of texts and allow children to become text detectives. Not only does it allow children the chance to practice the skill of reading (decoding and fluency) it provides a natural scaffold for high-order questioning, inference and deduction. Furthermore, the children are exposed to rich and varied vocabulary that they can hear being used in context. The children develop their skills in reading through this healthy diet of high-quality texts and modelled teaching.

We aim to ensure that every child is heard reading within Whole Class Reading every week although in reality they are heard more often as this is not our only way of teaching reading. On a regular basis, children will also read and be read to by teachers, other adults and each other during a variety of opportunities.
