Reading

Reading

Here at Trinity First School, our goal is to nurture a love of reading and for our children to become lifelong readers; demonstrating skills such as predicting, interpreting, retrieving, connecting with authors, explaining and reviewing a variety of genres.

Your role in your child’s reading is vital, working together with you, we aim to achieve our goal and ensure that all pupils:

  • Read with confidence, fluency and understanding.
  • Have an interest in books and literature and read for enjoyment.
  • Develop and foster a love of words, phrases and sayings, develop their meanings and use a growing vocabulary in spoken and written forms.
  • Discuss reading: express opinions, explain techniques and justify preferences about a wide range of literature.
  • Understand a range of text types and genres; develop knowledge to appreciate our rich and varied literary heritage.

Helping your child to develop their reading

Encourage your child to talk about the characters and the story. Questions like these are useful:

  • What do you think will happen next?
  • Why do you think the author used that word?
  • Who are your favourite characters? Explain why.
  • What do you think that means?

What else can your child read?

Shop signs, advertisements and notices when out shopping. Put them in charge of your shopping list!

What is the special offer on the cornflake packet? What are the instructions on the shampoo bottle?

Let them read items of interest in the newspapers. Encourage them to read comics and magazines connected with their hobbies. Get them to read the recipe while you are cooking.
