History: Significant people (Florence Nightingale and Mary Seacole)

PE: Gymnastics / Striking and fielding

DT: Food and nutrition

Year 2 Home Learning

Date set: Wednesday 26th February

Date due in: Tuesday 11th March

Spelling focus:

Week 1:

We will be learning about possessive apostrophes as a focus this week (which was on previous home learning. Please can you use this opportunity to practice Year 2 spelling words – link on website.

Week 2

We will be learning how to Add -ed, -ing, -er and -est to a root word ending in -y

e.g. copied, copier, happier, happiest, cried, replied, copying, crying, replying, relied

An idea to help practice is to

  • Draw ten different shapes on the page in different colours. Make sure they are big enough to write inside. Write a spelling word inside each shape. How many different shapes can you use?
  • Can you write the root word underneath each shape?

Maths focus:

We are continuing our work on doubles and near doubles. It would be great to continue to practice recalling what you have already learnt.  Can you practice the double and the half in a ping pong game with someone else at home?

Another game to play is snap.  Write out numbers 0-20 on cards and turn them over, can you match the double or half to its matched card.

Here is a link to an interactive game to practice doubles and near doubles if you’d like to.

Year 2 Home Learning

Date set: Wednesday 8th January

Date due in: Tuesday 21st January

Spelling focus:

Week 1:

We will be learning words that end in le

These words are: table, apple, bottle, little, middle, example, battle, terrible, struggle, possible

Some strategies to practice spelling these words are to write them in sentence.  Practice writing them in rainbow writing or with a partner playing spelling tennis.

Towards the end of week 1 we will have a dictation where we can apply our learning of these spellings.

Week 2

The next week we will be learning homophones and near homophones.

These are: bare, bear, sun, son, to, too, two, be, bee, night, knight

There will be a purple mash spelling quiz for you to have a go at in week 2.  Could you write these meanings out so that you know the spellings for each one.

Maths focus:

We are continuing our work on making 10 and then strategy but for subtraction.  The challenge is to subtract the numbers to get to 10 first and then subtract the remaining.  For example: 13-5. When we subtract across need to break the number being subtracted into two parts and then perform two calculations.

Here is an example of how this looks with a tens frame.

There are some calculations along the bottom for you to try.

Titanic Museum -

A huge thank you to everyone for being able to support the children in Hedgehogs Class this afternoon and share in their learning about the Titanic.  It has been a really full and busy half term and the children feel like they have developed their curiosity and have been so engaged in the topic that it was so fulfilling getting the opportunity to see them share this with you both in school and at home.  We really hope to be able to do more outcomes like this across the school so a huge thank you for your ongoing support.

Best wishes,

Mrs McMullen

PE: Dance

DT: Making a moving monster (mechanical)

Year 2 Home Learning

Date set: Wednesday 4th December

Date due in: Tuesday 17th December

Spelling focus:

Week 1:

We will be learning common exception words that are words that don’t follow any particular pattern or rule but need to be known by the end of Year 2.

These words are: door, floor, poor, because, find, kind, have, behind, child, children, help, will

Some strategies to practice spelling these words are to make up and use mnemonics e.g. because ‘big elephants can’t always use small exits.’ Each word has the start letter of a letter in the word.  Children are very familiar with lots from in school that they could share or could you make your own rhymes up.

Towards the end of week 1 we will have a dictation where we can apply our learning of these spellings.

Week 2

As this will be the last home learning before the new year we will be doing a week of consolidating some of the words we have had over this half term.

These are: not, look, word, work, hopeless, celebration, behind, giraffe, quiet, journey, sugar, wander

It would be good to practice these words by showing what you remember, do you remember their meanings or the rules they followed? You could use rainbow writing, pyramid writing or a change the font style of writing.

Could you also include writing these words in sentences?

Maths focus:

We are continuing our work on making 10 and then strategy.  The challenge is to add the numbers by first adding to 10 then adding the remainder.

E.g. 6 + 8 = 14

So 6 + 4 = 10 then add the 4 left over.

The following week we will be beginning our learning on using this strategy to subtract.

DT: Making a moving monster (mechanical)

Year 2 Home Learning

Date set: Wednesday 20th November

Date due in: Tuesday 3rd December

Spelling focus:

Week 1:

We will be learning words spelt with Contractions that can be used to join two separate words to make one shorter word.

E.g. can’t, didn’t, hasn’t, couldn’t, it’s, I’m, they’re, he’s, you’re, don’t

Some ways of practicing these words is to understand what the word started as. It is also a good idea to practice how we use them in sentences both verbally and written.  There will be a purple mash quiz for you to try during this week too.

Towards the end of week 1 we will have a dictation where we can apply our learning of these spellings.

Week 2

We will be learning words with Words ending in tion

E.g. station, fiction, solution, section, motion, creation, celebration, nation, caution, position

It would be good to practice these words by showing how the suffix being added changes the meaning.  Could you write it out before the suffix was added and after? Playing games like bingo where the children write 6 of the words in a bingo grid, when a word is said if they have it written and spelt correctly they can cross it off.  How quickly can they get bingo? It also lends itself to practicing with rainbow writing – the root word being in one colour and the suffix being in another.

Maths focus:

We are continuing our work on making 10 and then strategy.  These document to the left will be on the class page for you to download to make it easier to follow.  I would love to see some examples of tens frames used to support the next 2 weeks.

11.11.24 - My apologies for not adding the spelling quiz before now.  Please find it as a 2do on purple mash. It is set until the homework needs to be handed in next week.

Year 2 Home Learning

Date set: Wednesday 6th November

Date due in: Tuesday 19th November

Spelling focus:

Week 1:

We will be learning words spelt with suffixes ness, -ly and -ment

E.g. enjoyment, sadness, badly, happiness, employment, proudly, darkness, payment, quickly, silliness

We look into what happens when these suffixes get added and how it changes the root word e.g. happy changes to happiness

A way of practicing these words this week could be to take on the spelling quiz on purple mash (see in 2do’s).  It would be good to practice writing them in sentences or building them through a spelling pyramid.

Towards the end of week 1 we will have a dictation where we can apply our learning of these spellings.

Week 2

We will be learning words with suffixes -less and -ful

E.g. careful, playful, hopeless, thoughtful, beautiful, cheerful, useless, careless, fearless, penniless

Maths focus:

For our number fluency over the next 2 weeks we will be doing our learning about 10 and a bit. The tens frame and blank number sentences below show an example of how you could show 10 and a bit.

We will then be moving onto adding where we start by bridging to 10 and then adding what is left, see the example.

This could be done on a number line, using a tens frame or drawing out the tens and ones to help.

Year 2 Home Learning

Date set: Wednesday 16th October

Date due in: Tuesday 5th November

Spelling focus:

Week 1:

We will be learning words spelt with the o sound that follow w and qu

E.g. want, watch, wander, quantity, squash, wallet, wasp, quality, quarry, wash

A way of practicing these words this week could be to take on the spelling quiz on purple mash (see in 2do’s).  It could also be good to practice writing them in different ways, spikey writing, bubble writing, getting bigger writing. We have had a go at this in class so the children should be familiar with the different ways.

Towards the end of week 1 we will have a dictation where we can apply our learning of these spellings.

Week 2

We will be learning words that are a review of all the words learnt this half term E.g. j sounds, ey endings, common exception words o after w and qu.

It would be good to practice these words in and out of sentences.  Playing games like bingo where the children write 6 of the words in a bingo grid, when a word is said if they have it written and spelt correctly they can cross it off.  How quickly can they get bingo?

Maths focus:

For our number fluency over the next 2 weeks we will be doing our learning around 5 and a bit.  Here are some examples of how we can represent the different numbers. One side of the number sentence always starts with 5 and then we add all the numbers we can but go no higher than 10.  See the images below to support.

Before sharing the home learning for the next 2 weeks I wanted to take this opportunity to say a huge thank you to everyone for taking on the new home learning with such enthusiasm and determination.  It has been wonderful to look through the books and see the amazing practice that has been going on.  Please see below for the next 2 weeks.  These will be added to the children's home learning books too.

Best wishes,

Mrs McMullen

Towards the end of the week we will have a dictation where we can apply our learning of these spellings.

Week 2

We will be learning words that are common exception words E.g. move, prove, just, sure, sugar, eye, could, should, would, like, big, then.

Another way to practice spellings is through the purple mash spelling quiz (set as an open 2do challenge if you’d like to. If you enjoyed the previous way of practicing you can continue this instead.

Home Learning - 18.9.24

(Please see the below information in your child's Home Learning book)

Date set: Wednesday 18th September

Date due in: Tuesday 1st October

Topics this half term

Science: Animals including humans

Geography: Where I live

PE: Fundamentals (e.g. running jumping)

Art: Basic art skills (e.g. sketching, mixing)

Spelling focus:

Week 1:

We will be learning words spelt as ge and dge at the end of words, and spelt as g and j elsewhere before e, i and y

e.g. charge, bulge, village, gem, giant, magic, giraffe, energy, jacket, adjust

A great way to practice spellings is by breaking them down into smaller chunks, spotting patterns or doing tasks like rainbow writing.  This is where you write the word over and over on top of each other but change the colour each time you write it.

Towards the end of the week we will have a dictation where we can apply our learning of these spellings.

Week 2

We will be learning words that are homophones

e.g. their, they’re, hear, here, quite, quiet, see, sea, one, won

Another way to practice spellings is through games like spelling tennis where you bat the letters back to each other until you build the whole word.

Towards the end of the week we will have a dictation where we can apply our learning of these spellings.

Maths focus:

For our number fluency over the next 2 weeks we will have a focus on one more and one less and 2 more / 2 less.

We will be recapping knowledge of odd and even.

Making this part of your everyday routines is a great way to allow children to practice 1 more, 1 less for example. “Please can you get me some cars. I’d like 1 more than 5. Can you get me some marbles? I’d like one less than 9. We need to get some forks out for dinner, we need one more than 4.” Children could also practice recording 1 more, 1 less in number sentences e.g. 4 + 1 =

Welcome back

Hello Year 2, adventure awaits and we can't wait to welcome you back on Thursday, We hope you have all had the most wonderful summer holidays.  Our Class Page will be the best place to come for dates, updates and home learning information.  If its not here it will be on the school newsletter or a separate email will be sent home so please keep an eye out.

PE days - this term our PE days will be a Wednesday and a Friday.  PE kit should be worn to school on both of these days, starting this Friday.  It is also very handy to have your PE kit bag with spare clothes in case of wet weather or accidents where clothing may need changing.  These can stay on pegs and will be sent home every half term.

Reading - We would love for you to read daily and we will make sure you have a reading book by the end of this week so that this can begin.  When you read and record in your diary just 3 times a week you will be entered into our whole school reading raffle.  We will be signing diaries on a Thursday ready to pick from the raffle on a Friday during our Value Star Worship.

Library - Every week on a Monday, we will have a chance to visit the library and you will be able to scan a book out to take home for the week.  Every Monday will be a chance for you to bring this book back and you can scan out your next read.

This year, home learning will look a little different. Please keep an eye out for information on this to follow. The aim is to get everyone settled and so there will be no home learning sent out until the WB 16th September.
