Maths focus:
Our Maths learning has been focused on measurement. The children will learn about length and height and will compare, describe and solve practical problems using vocabulary such as long/short, longer/shorter, tall/short, double/half.
Your children can find objects around the house and use this vocabulary to explain what they know. Be precise with the different between length and height (length is from side to side, height is from the bottom to top).
They could create towers and compare the heights, or cut pieces of ribbon/string and order them from the shortest to the longest. There are lots of everyday jobs that require the knowledge of length and height your child came be involved with.
For example -
Which pencil is shorter?
Which pencil is longer?
Use the words taller and shorter to write a comparative sentence about the heights of different animals.

Maths focus:
In our maths lessons, we have been learning about addition and subtraction number facts of numbers up to 20. Please continue to practise reading and writing the teen numbers so they are secure on this whilst we look at their number bonds.
Calculating subtraction number facts written in different ways are a great way to show true understanding of the equals sign. We have learned that the equals sign means ‘is the same as’ and it really helps the children fully understand. For example –
13 – 4 = 9 (whole – part is the same as part left over)
9 = 13 – 4 (part left over is the same as whole – part)
Using 10 as the whole to show these different ways of writing subtraction would be a great start.
10 – 4 = 6 _____ = 10 - 5
______ = 10 – 4 7 = 10 - ______
10 – 2 = 8 _____ = 10 - 1
______ = 10 – 2 9 = 10 - ______
The children can draw counters and cross them out to show how they know both sides of the equals sign are the same as each other.

In our maths lessons, we will be learning about 3D shapes (cuboid, cube, sphere, pyramid, cylinder). It would be great for you to help your children spot these shapes in a real-life context. E.g. some cardboard boxes are cuboids because they have rectangular faces. A tennis ball is a sphere because it is perfectly round. An ice cube is a cube because all of the faces are square.
In our Number Sense fluency lessons, we will be moving onto the strategy of ‘1 more, 1 less’. The children should be able to know automatically that one more is the next number and 1 less is the number before. E.g.
5 + 1 =
5 – 1 =
___ = 5 + 1
___ = 5 – 1

Maths focus:
In our maths lessons, we will be moving onto number bonds to 10. There are lots of different ways to help children remember what 2 numbers make 10. Examples include, rainbow of 10, part-part-whole models using objects in each part, and tens frames to show the different parts that make 10.
As we are also moving back to solidify addition and subtraction facts of numbers up to 10, it would be beneficial if you can continue to consolidate learning that the children have done prior to this. This may include:
- Subitising (knowing a number of objects by sight without counting)
- 2D shapes
- Ordering numbers
- 1 more and 1 less with numbers up to 100.

Week 1:
This week in Year 1 we have learnt about the -ed suffix. The children now know that when the -ed suffix is added onto the end of a verb (an action or being word) it changes it to past tense. They have learnt the rule that if a past tense verb ends in the sound ‘t’ ‘d’ or ‘id’ then we use the -ed suffix. For example –
jump --> jumped (t sound at end)
pull --> pulled (d sound at end)
want --> wanted (id sound at end)
Please practise writing different types of verbs with your child and then adding the -ed suffix to the root word to make it past tense. They can then put these into a sentence if they want an extra challenge. There is no need for the children to understand the root word changing (e.g. run à ran – although we have discussed this in class).
Week 2:
The next Year 1 High Frequency words are:
mum for all in went it
Maths focus:
In our maths lessons, we are continuing to work with numbers up to 100. Please practise reading numbers (written as digits) up to 100 as a lot of children tend to mix up the tens and ones and read them backwards for example, 37 as 73.
We will then be moving onto the addition and subtraction facts of 7, 8 and 9. The daily number sense sessions (and knowing the number bonds to these numbers) tie in really nicely with this learning and will help the children have the foundations to work out the addition and subtraction. Drawing counters and crossing out is a good way to help represent subtraction, and part-part-whole models can help with addition. Please practise a variety of ways your child can solve these number facts, for example:
7 – 5 = ______ 7 – 3 = ______ 7 - ______ = 1
______ = 7 – 5 ______ = 7 – 3 7 - ______ = 6
Just a reminder - Library book swap is every Friday. Please send your library book in with your child so they can swap their book for a new one. Thank you.
Hi all,
Just a quick message to say the children will be coming home with some extra Number Sense booklets in their book bags for them to complete over the half term. There is no expectation for these to be brought back into school but feel free if you would like to. The booklets are focusing on 'subitising to 10 on a tens frame' and 'make and break 5, 4, 3, 2 and 10'. Your child should be able to complete these independently so can be a little task for them to work through over the half term break.
I hope you all have a lovely half term.
Miss Maidment

Week 1:
We will be learning the Year 1 Common Exception words (or the children know them as ‘red words’) throughout the year.
The spellings are:
me she we no go so
These are ‘red words’ and therefore the children cannot always use their sounds to help them. They simply have to learn that there may be a ‘tricky part’ for example the word ‘said’ sounds like it would be an ‘e’ in the middle but it’s actually ‘ai’.
Throughout our Phonics lessons during the week, the children will be asked to spell the ‘red word’ of the day.
Week 2:
The next Year 1 Common Exception words are:

Maths focus:
During our most recent maths lessons we have been focusing on 2D shapes.
We have learned about rectangles, squares, triangles and circles. Asking your children to identify these shapes out in the world can really embed their knowledge. For example, asking your child what shape the road sign is or what shape the table is, but then deepening their knowledge by asking them ‘how do you know?’ The children will be able to explain how they know using key vocabulary such as ‘straight, sides, right angles, curved, centre, distance, equal’. Drawing these shapes and labelling them is also a great activity.
During our daily ‘number sense’ fluency sessions, we have been looking at strategies such as ‘Make and break 5, 4, 3 and 2’. There are some examples of these activities on the following page in their home learning books.

Maths focus:
During our maths lessons in the first few weeks of school have focused on number and place value.
We have been working on numbers up to 20. The children have been exploring the structure of teens numbers and how they are made of ’10 and something’. Representing a teen number on 2 tens frames is used to understand its composition (filling up the ten first). Estimating numbers on a number line will also be a great skill to practise as it really helps the children to embed their knowledge of number and more or less than. Counting forwards and backwards from any given number to another number will ensure the children understand increase and decrease without skipping numbers. Writing this down can also promote great conversations such as ’15 and 16 both have one ten but I know that 6 is bigger than 5 so 16 must come after 15 if we are counting forwards.’

Maths focus:
For our number fluency over the next 2 weeks we will have a focus on subitising. Subitising is where the children are able to quickly and accurately see how many items are in a small group without counting them.
I have sent the children home with Number Sense Book 1 for them to finish.
Making this part of your everyday routines is a great way to allow children to practice subitising for example. Rolling a dice and saying the number it lands on without counting, picking up some leaves on a walk and asking your child to tell you how many there are without counting. Questions like “How did you know there were 5 there?” are useful to help your child spot patterns like “3 and 2 makes 5, or 4 and 1 more makes 5.” Showing numbers with your fingers up is also another great subitising method.
Hello Rabbits!
We are very much looking forward to welcoming you back into School on Thursday! I hope you have all had a wonderful summer holiday and are just as excited as I am to be starting a new year in Rabbits class.
PE days - this term our PE days will be a Tuesday and a Friday. PE kit should be worn to school on both of these days, starting this Friday. It is also very handy to have your PE kit bag with spare clothes in case of wet weather or accidents where clothing may need changing. These can stay on pegs and will be sent home every half term.
Reading - We would love for you to read daily and we will make sure you have a reading book by the end of this week so that this can begin. When you read and record in your diary just 3 times a week you will be entered into our whole school reading raffle. We will be signing diaries on a Thursday ready to pick from the raffle on a Friday during our Value Star Worship. Reading books that are suited to your child's reading level will be changed and sent home every Monday.
Library - Every week on a Friday, we will have a chance to visit the library and you will be able to scan a book out to take home for the week. Every Friday will be a chance for you to bring this book back and you can scan out your next read.
Home diaries will be sent home at a later date.
This year, home learning will look a little different. Please keep an eye out for information on this to follow. The aim is to get everyone settled and so there will be no home learning sent out until the WB 16th September.
Enjoy the rest of the holidays!
Miss Maidment :)
