What an amazing first term in Squirrels class, I am so proud of all the children on how far they've come from day one! I really hope they've enjoyed school as much as I have teaching them! We have had a lovely festive week to end the term for Christmas! They finished their Christmas cards, made Christmas story masks, played games, danced, made Christmas tree decorations, decorated cookies, made Santa plates, opened presents from Santa and much more! Also if you type in The Verwood School Carol Service 2020, you can see the children sing their song from last week.

This week in read, write, inc and maths the children had a go at Christmas booklets, which they have bought home. In PE with Elliot they had a go at using a variety of equipment to improve their balancing skills. In RE they made Christmas story character masks and in computing they painted Christmas trees and stockings on purple mash.

Mrs Hawkins kindly stuck in their logins in their pupil planner, so please have a go at the Christmas story quiz online using their logins. The children will need an adult to help them read the questions and multiple choice answers. This is due by 03.01.21, thank you!

I would like to say a big thank you to the effort that you have put in to home learning, it has really showed through their progress! Also another thank you to the donations and lovely words that you have given Mrs Hawkins, Mrs Webber and I, it was so lovely! I really have enjoyed everyday with the children and I look forward to next term! I hope you all have a lovely Christmas and New Year!

They also put the baubles they made onto the tree in the car park, so see if you can spot them! This week in read. write, inc we have been writing our Christmas cards and drawing, describing and labelling or writing a sentence about what we want for Christmas.

In Maths we have been focusing on 3D shapes, the children have become familiar with the shape names and their properties such as sides, vertices and faces. We have done activities such as grouping 2D and 3D shapes, describing and guessing the 3D shape with our partners, recognising 3D shapes in the environment and recreating 3D shapes out of playdough.

In PE the children practiced changing direction safely with Elliot. The children had gymnastics with me and practiced jumping and landing safely, while using shapes like star and straight, and then had a go at making their own jumping and balancing routines.

Home Learning

Keep practicing the sounds and green words in their sound tins and put sounds together to make words. The words we have been learning to blend this week are bin, cot, kit, mud, up, bad. So please practice making these words with your sound tins and writing them. The children can also keep practicing their letter formation by writing lists, labels, captions or sentences, etc in daily life. Have a go at writing down some names of your teddies at home! Please practice reading and write it into the reading record in the pupil planners.

Please practice counting and recognising numbers to 20, and talk about what is one more and one less of a number. Have a go at doing a shape hunt around the house and garden to see if you can spot any of the 3D shapes we have learnt such as cube, cuboid, sphere, cone, cylinder and pyramid! You can even make a tally of the ones you see, like we have done in school.

Lastly have a go at exploring mini mash on purple mash, remember your log ins are in your pupil planners.

I hope you have a lovely weekend and I will see you on Monday for the last week before the Christmas holidays! Have fun looking through this weeks photos! Love from Miss Inwood yesheart

What an exciting and festive week we have had in Squirrels! The children have been so excited with the decorations, our Squirrels Christmas tree and festive activities! We also had two special visitors this week, our class elf Snowflake and Father Christmas! This week in read, write inc we have been focusing on the book 'Penguin and Pinecone' by Salina Yoon. The children had a go at drawing, describing and labelling or writing a sentence about their favourite part of the story and what they would take with them on a long sledge journey.

In maths we have been focusing on 2D shapes, the children have become familiar with the shape name and their properties such as sides and vertices by doing various activities. They have made pictures with shapes, counted the sides and vertices, recognised shapes in the environment and tested their partner on guessing the shape by describing their sides and vertices.

In PE the children practiced their balancing skills both with Elliot and I in fundamental skills and gymnastics. We explored different balances and learnt we have to squeeze our muscles to help us stay still.

In RE they learnt more about the Christmas story and had a go at remembering the characters and drawing a part of the story. The children have also had fun with purple mash in computing, Welly Wednesday, explorer time and OUR MARBLE TREAT! So a big well done to the children for getting all the marbles in the jar, they all deserved it! For the marble treat we played party games, made marshmallow snowman biscuits and Christmas tree decorations.

Home Learning

Keep practicing the sounds from their sound tin and putting the sounds together to make words. Some children have bought home green words to cut out and put in their tin to practice as well. The words we have been learning to blend this week are tip, top, sit, dig, got and gap. The children can practice their writing by using their school reading book or a book at home, by labelling or writing a sentence about a part. The children can also practice their writing in daily life like helping to write the shopping list or writing their Christmas list!

Please practice counting and recognising numbers to 10 and to 20. Also have a go at drawing the 2D shapes we have learnt this week, square, rectangle, circle, triangle and hexagon. Then have a go at counting the sides and vertices, as we will be carrying on with 2D shapes in the future and focusing on 3D shapes next week.

I hope the children had a fun and festive week, enjoyed their marble treat and meeting Father Christmas! I hope you all have a lovely weekend and I look forward to seeing you on Monday! Love from Miss Inwood smileyheart

The children also had fun in computing, welly Wednesday and explorer time. The children loved putting the wet suits on then exploring on the field and making leaf necklaces.

Home Learning

Please can the children practice their sounds from their tins and have a go at putting the sounds together to make words. The words we have been learning to blend this week are in, on, an, and, pan, pat, pin. The children can practice their writing using their school reading book or a book at home, by labelling a picture or writing a sentence about the picture. Also please write in the reading record in their pupil planner when you read with them, so I know what school book they have had so I don't give them the same one again.

Please practice counting in daily life, for example when walking up steps, food shopping, building blocks, etc. And try recognising numbers in daily life, such as on signs, buses, in shops, on tv, on number plates, etc. Also practice writing numbers.

The children can have a go at logging on and exploring purple mash online, I explained in the last post how to access it so please scroll down if you aren't sure. You can use purple mash on an iPad, computer or phone.

I will also attach a picture of our knowledge mat about what we have been learning in our topic 'starry, starry night.' Please discussed some of the keywords on the knowledge mat in daily life.

As it's getting cold the children are allowed to wear a hat, scarf and gloves, especially as they go outside a lot. Also please bring in £1 on Monday if you haven't already for the Christmas cakes.

I hope you all have a lovely weekend and enjoy looking through the photos! Love from Miss Inwood laughheart

Friday 20th November 2020

Well done to the children for another fantastic week! This week in read, write, inc we have been focusing on the book 'How to catch a star' by Oliver Jeffers. We had a go at drawing and labelling our favourite part of the story, and drawing and labelling how we would catch a star. I was so impressed with how well the children did and how enthusiastic they were to draw and write! We also played a 'special friend' sound game on Welly Wednesday for writing. I called out a sound and the children had to run and stand on the right sound. Please can the children keep practising their sounds in their tin and have a go at putting some of the sounds together to make words. They can practice their writing at home by drawing a picture and labelling it.

In maths we have been learning how to use number rods to make patterns and help us count to 10. The children used the number rods describing the length to make them into pictures. They have also had a go at putting the number cards next to the number rods, by ordering the cards first 1 to 10, then spinning the numicon spinner and putting the colour rod it lands on with the right number! Some children had a go at writing their numbers too! Please practising counting in daily life and practising their number formation.

The children had fun in PE doing ball skills with Elliot and they started gymnastics with me! Maybe they could show people at home the moves they learnt in gymnastics such as the crab, scorpion, inch worm, tuck, pike and straddle! They also had fun in computing using an app to help the letter formation and blend sounds into words! They can have a go on a website we use in school called purple mash at home, type in purple mash to google, then click on mini mash and they can log in using their username and password which is inside their pupil planner. In RE we spoke about Jesus' birth and how the adults in school once used to be children like them! They drew pictures of what they thought teachers looked like as children, they then guessed who they thought was who using the staff child photos on the school website. They had fun in explorer time doing various activities such as role play, construction, reading, creative activities, junk modelling, writing and maths!

I hope you all have a lovely weekend and hopefully the weather gets better! Love from Miss Inwood yesheart

Another week been and gone in Squirrels class! This week in read, write, inc the children have learnt the special friend sounds ng and nk. They have bought the letter formation sheet home to practice these and also sounds to cut up and put in their tin to practice. Also in read, write, inc this week we have started to do our phonics and writing groups. In phonics some children are working with Mrs Hawkins to read and write words and short sentences. And some children are working with me to blend our sounds into words, this week we have focused on making m, a, s, d and t into words such as mad, mat, sad, sat, dad and at. The children can have a go at doing this at home with their sounds from their sound tin and put the sounds together to make 2 or 3 letter words. In writing we have looked at the book Whatever Next by Jill Murphy. Some of the children had a go at hot seating, pretending to be baby bear and the other children asked them questions about their trip to the moon. We then had a go at drawing food we would take for a picnic on the moon and labelling the foods using our sounds we have learnt. The children could have a go at this at home, write a shopping list for the adult at home to then go to the shops with! Please write any reading they do at home in their reading record in their pupil planner, thank you!

In maths we have been using numicon to help our counting and ordering! We have ordered the numicon from 1 to 10 and put the number cards next to them to represent the numicon with numbers. The children worked in pairs doing various activities such as one child swaps two numicon and the other child has to spot which numicon have been swapped! We have also picked out 3 numicon and order them in size of small, medium and large. Please have a go at counting in daily life at home and the formation of their numbers. You could also make your own number cards and order them to 10, and put buttons or even chocolates next to each card to represent that number!

The children have also had fun doing PE, computing, RE and explorer time. We spoke about remembrance day and what we have it for, the children then made some lovely poppies using paper collage. In RE we spoke about keeping our world that God created tidy, so we made tidy up posters to make others aware! In PE they practiced their ball skills and different ways of travelling and copying a partner while keeping a safe space. And this afternoon they did some gardening in our Squirrels outdoor area! Keep discussing days of the week and months of the year at home too!

I hope you've had a lovely week Squirrels and I look forward to seeing you all next week! Love from Miss Inwood laughheart

Friday 6th November 2020

What a lovely week back we have had in Squirrels after half term! We have started our new topic this week called 'Starry, starry night', for information on this and what the children will be learning please look at the topic letter in our class letters and information 2020-2021.

This week in read, write, inc the children have learnt the sounds z, ch, qu and x. Please can they practice the letter formation of these in their booklet they have bought home and also practice sounding out the letters in their sound tin, and add the new ones from this week. Pratice using the sounds from your tin to make words. There was also a letter sent home earlier this week stating the schools reading policy and why the children are on picture books. Please log any reading in their pupil planner. Feel free for them to read extra books at home, but also read the picture books as this helps their comprehension and write their own words to do with what is happening. In maths this week the children have been learning about number lines and using numicon to help their counting and number recognition. Please practice counting in daily activities at home and practice writing numbers.

The children have had fun in other lessons such as computing, RE, PE and explorer time. They have decorated stars which are displayed around the classroom, had fun in the new role play 'light and dark' using torches to experiment with different materials and shadows, went on a scavenger hunt to find changes within the autumn season, a hunt for a certain number of objects in maths on welly Wednesday, made playdough animals in RE talking about God's creation, made star crowns and junk modelling! We have also started learning the months of the year, so practice talking about months at home as well as the days of the week. Please check their bookbags everyday for letters, worksheets, etc.

Have a lovely weekend and I'll see you all on Monday! Love from Miss Inwoodyesheart

The children have bought home the booklet to practice the letter formation and also a sheet with the new sounds on to cut up and put in their word tins. At home please practice the letter formation, sounds in their tins and writing some cvc words (they can use the sounds in their tin to put together to make words to sound, blend and write).  In maths this week the children have learnt the number formation of 9 and 10, so please practice writing numbers 1 to 10 at home, and counting in daily life where possible.

This week the children have had lots of fun in lessons and doing creative tasks such as leaf printing, making numbers out of playdough and making animals using split pins. I will attach a picture of our knowledge mat from the topic we have just completed, if you could have a look at the vocabulary and talk to the children in daily life about harvest/ autumn, noticing what they can see in the environment around them! Please also keep practicing the days of the week and discussing the weather each day. After half term we will start looking at the months of the year on our calendar more.

I hope you all have a lovely half term and I can't wait to hear about what you all get up to! Love from Miss Inwood smileylaughyesheart

Well done to the Squirrels for another amazing week! This week in read, write, inc the children have learnt the sounds e, l, h, r and our special friend sound sh (two letters together that make one sound!). The children have bought home a booklet with these sounds in to practice the letter formation at home. They have also bought home a sheet with the new sounds to cut up and put in their word tin to practice! The booklets and sound tins can stay at home to practice. In maths this week the children have learnt the number formation of 7 and 8, so please practice writing numbers 1 to 8 at home. And keep practicing zipping coats up independently!

This week the children have had lots of fun in lessons and doing creative tasks such as animal mask making, autumn crown making and leaf rubbing! On Welly Wednesday the children did an autumn scavenger hunt to see what they could find around the field. And today they have been tidying our garden area! The children have also impressed me on how quickly they have learnt the days of the week, as we discuss the day, month and weather everyday!

And please check bookbags everyday for letters, leaflets, new reading books, children's work, etc!

I hope you all have a lovely weekend and I look forward to seeing you on Monday! Love from Miss Inwood smiley

Friday 9th October 2020

Another week has flown by in Squirrels class! This week in read, write, inc the children have learnt the sounds and letter formation of c, k, u, b and f. Please can they practice these sounds and letter formation at home, as well as recapping sounds we have learnt previously - m, a, s, d, t, i, n, p, g and o. The children will bring a sheet home to practice the letter formation and sounds of the ones we have learnt this week - this doesn't need to come back into school, it's just to help with learning at home. Also keep practicing their names! In maths this week the children have learnt the number formation of 5 and 6, so please practice writing numbers 1 to 6 at home. And also keep practicing zipping their coats up themselves please! This week the children had a go at sorting foods into categories, trying the vegetables and fruit and painting with them!

Please could the children bring in their bookbags every day as they often have things to bring home and on Monday they are going to start bringing home reading books (just picture books for now) and then the books need to be bought back into school on Friday, thank you! I will send out their pupil planner which contains their reading record inside, so please write in whenever you have read with them (the name of the book, a comment about their reading, date and initials), thank you!

On Monday I will also be sending their sound tins home, this is a tin with sounds in that they have learnt already - these can stay at home. As each week I will just send a sheet home with new sounds on to cut up and put in their words tins, thank you!

Enjoy your weekend and I look forward to seeing all your smiley faces on Monday! Love from Miss Inwood smiley

Friday 2nd October 2020

What a busy week 4 we have had in Squirrels class! The children have had so much fun this week doing new lessons and activities. I am so impressed at how hard they have worked and how they all join in with anything and everything we do! They all really enjoyed the PE lesson with Elliot on Monday and myself on Thursday. We learnt about ball skills and what makes a safe space. They have also started their computing and RE lessons this week, which they all did really well in! And their first welly Wednesday where we went exploring on the field to see what plants and insects we could find. We then did Maths outside after exploring on the field, and they had a go at ordering the numicon to 10 and writing the numbers 1 to 3 with chalk. Finally today we have done some gardening, to tidy up our Squirrels garden area ready to eventually do some planting! Also a well done to the children who got our first few marbles in the jar! I have also chose our first super star this week, so they will find out very soon and receive a certificate in the post, then stand up in front of the rest of the school on zoom on Tuesday!

This week in read, write, inc the children have learnt the sounds and letter formation of i, n, p, g and o. So please can they practice these at home, the children should have a sheet they bought home today to practice these sounds on. And also practicing their names please. In maths this week they have learnt the number formation of 3 and 4, so could they please practice these at home too, thank you! Lastly could the children also practice doing up their coats at home themselves. And making sure the children are in PE kit on Monday and Thursday, and have wellies to keep in school for welly Wednesdays and gardening, thank you!

Also a reminder can children please only have a school lunch or lunch box from home, not both! If you want your child to have a school lunch please make sure you order them enough in advance. We also provide the children with a fruit snack at break time so children don't need to bring in their own snack, thank you. And nothing containing nuts in lunchboxes please, due to allergies.

I hope you all have a lovely weekend and I can't wait to see you all on Monday! Love from Miss Inwood smileyheart

Friday 25th September 2020

Well done to Squirrels for an amazing week 3! We are so impressed with how well they have settled into the routine in school, especially starting Read, Write, Inc and Maths. They all sat beautifully during the lessons and all tried so hard, we are so proud of them. This week in Read, Write, Inc they learnt the sounds and letter formation of m, a, s, d and t. So could you please practice writing these letters at home, as well as practicing your name, thank you! In Maths the children have learnt the number formation of 1 and 2, so please also have a go at practicing these at home too. This week we have started to send Kipper home - each week I will choose one child to take him home and they will need to take pictures with him and the adult at home can write up about what adventures you got up to. This year Kipper has had to be a picture due to the circumstances, but I hope the children still enjoy it just as much. A letter will go home with Kipper to explain what you need to do, thank you!

Next week on Monday and Thursday please can you send the children in PE kit, as these are the days they will be doing PE every week. Also next week we are going to be starting Welly Wednesday! This is when the children spend the morning outside learning and exploring, so wellies will be needed! Their wellies will need to be kept in school please so we can just grab them anytime we go outside, especially when the weather starts to get worse. So can you send them in with wellies to keep in school ready for Wednesday next week please. Lastly please make sure the children are sent in with coats, especially as it is starting to get colder. As we love going outside in Squirrels, whatever the weather!

I hope you all have a lovely weekend and I look forward to seeing you on Monday! Love from Miss Inwood smiley

Friday 18th September 2020

Well done to all the children for another amazing week! They all came in brilliantly again, we are so impressed with them so they all should be very proud of themselves! It was lovely to have the whole class together on Thursday and Friday. They were all amazing again at washing their hands and getting into the routine of school. They have had lots of fun in discovery time and doing different activities this week, such as circle time, dancing to go noodles, singing outside and painting a portrait of themselves! They will be able to take their painting home next week. They were also brilliant at getting ready for home time and some of them said some beautiful prayers too!

Next week we are going to start phonics in read, write inc and maths - this will be done in the first half of the day so all the children will be there. The children will be starting PE on Monday 28th September, which then PE will be twice a week on a Monday and second day to be confirmed in the blog next week. They don't need to bring a snack as fruit is provided at break time. Children that are full time will need to bring in a lunch unless they are registered for school meals. Also children should only have water in their bottles at school please.

Thank you for another lovely week Squirrels, I look forward to seeing you all on Monday, from Miss Inwood laugh

Welcome to Squirrels Class Blog! A big well done to the children for an amazing first week! They came in beautifully and were brilliant at washing their hands well to stop germs spreading. They have all come in and left with big smiles on their faces, which I am very pleased about! They had lots of fun in the classroom and outdoor area making friends with others in their group and doing lots of activities. In the mornings they have all practised tracing and writing their names. Afterwards we'd do the register, discuss our class timetable, calendar and class rules. The children would then choose different activities to do around the classroom and outdoor area. They were also brilliant at getting ready for home time - waiting behind their chairs and washing hands. Here are some photos of what Squirrels got up to this week! We can't wait to see you next week for more fun and meeting more of your class friends!

Thank you for a lovely week, from Miss Inwood smileyheart
